Bing gains 12% of search market

Bing has now been a usable search engine for a year and it has now claimed 12.7 % of the internet search market according to ComScore.
Google has not faired as well and has experienced a drop to 62.7% and Yahoo soared up by 18.9%.
Satya Nadello of Microsoft reported to the BBC that they are clearly making an impact but remain at present a ‘low share player’. But with internet use on the up could this small share holder take centre stage? Greg Sterling, form Search Engine Land, explained to the BBC that Bing were fighting against Google who have become ‘entrenched in the culture’ and that this was going to be difficult to change, not expecting Bing to reach above 30-40% of the share of the market.
Microsoft’s next steps seem to be to tap into the mobile market and hope that location may bring in better search results.

Bing reach increases with bigger market share

In a recent report from Hitwise, the figures show Bing ‘The Decision Engine’ as increasing its market share and moving into the 3rd position behind Yahoo and Google.

The report covered 4 weeks up to the 26th June and and showed Bing accounted for 9.85 per cent of all searches during the monitored period.  Yahoo which currently holds the 2nd position only hold 14.37% share which has remained unchanged for some time.  With this increase in Bing users, Yahoo will need to pull it’s socks up if it is to stay ahead of the new kid on the block.

Google remained at the top spot with over 70% of searches (during the 4 week reporting period), however this is down 1.5% from the report in May

Also in the search engine marketing arena Hitwise also found that their has been a distinct increase in longer search terms during June.  Searches with 5, 6, and 7 words all increased by almost double compared to previous search reports.  However, 2 word searches still remained the most popular.

Could Bing now be on target to take over Yahoo in the battle of the search engines?

Bing offers better support for Twitter

With twitter growing in popularity it is becoming increasingly important in SEO as both Google and Bing incorporate it into their search listings.  But which one does it better?  Well there is an Independent study carried out by an SEO consultant which indicates that Bing would have the advantage.

Both Google and Bing approach tweets in different ways, Bing creates a whole new page just for tweets whereas google seem to merge them into the search results.

The SEO Consult seemed to say that even though the real-time search results were displayed on the main search page, they seem to go unnoticed by a large majority of the users.  Bing however,  showed that people who were interested in looking for real-time search results find it easier to find the information.  He concluded that Bing offered a more robust real-time search, with additional options.

With social search increasing in popularity we will be looking at OneRiot launched last week which is dedicated to ONLY social searching.

Top Tips #1 for Bing Optimisation

Microsoft Bing is growing hugely in popularity and could have the potential of taking on the might of Google.  As SEO specialists we are no stranger to the ever changing algorithms of google and we need to analyse and keep up to date with the latest SEO techniques.  Here is our first set of tips for Microsoft Bing SEO Optimisation.

1. Bing has a tendancy to put emphasize on one’s domain page. Old pages are considered good. We are not saying that Bing will ignore new sites but as a tip, If you want to get higher on Bing list then its good to get an older domain for your website.

2. Titles, Title, Titles, keep on top of your titles as to ensure a good listing keep your titles keyword rich and make connections between your titles and your content.

3. Minimum & Maximum Text:   Google does not bother about text length at the moment but it appears that Bing does, so keep your text well over 300 words as lower than this will risk bing not checking your domain.

4. Outbound links are now considered: Yes, you heard right, apparently Bing check outbound links for relevance as well now so keep an eye on who you are linking to.

Bing More Flash Friendly

love

Flash has been in a crazy position this year after a brilliant start with Sony saying that they are making new television flash enabled.  This was great news for developers as the cross over from computer to TV could be much more animated and interactive.  Adobe gave themselves a pat on the back on a acquisition well done.

But before they had time to order the champagne, Apple suddenly announced that Flash based games were to be pulled from the app store and flash converted games would no longer be accepted.  This was a huge blow as game creators could earn additional revenue from this new avenue.

And now with have the year half through Bing has been pulling out the stops to be a major contender to Google. And they are different, check out BINGLE which compares both Bing and Google results.

So what we SEO people want to know is Bing’s algorithm and is it so different that we need to rethink our SEO strategy and optimise for Bing as well.

What we can tell is that flash is much more acceptable by Bing. Optimising a Flash site for Google can be a SEO nightmare. It’s still to early to bring you exactly what Bing does to read flash heavy sites but the fact that Bing is much more accepting of flash is great news for all those site which uses a lot of flash.
